NOT EVEN THE EPIDEMIC CAN REDUCE INTERNET FRAUD CASES

Our customers may come across a new deceptive ad on the web.

23 March 2020

Magyar Posta regularly informs its customers about the appearance of deceptive phishing ads. In our experience, the number of Internet fraud cases has not diminished during the coronavirus epidemic. Another misleading advertisement has appeared online and on social media, falsely using the name of Magyar Posta.

In recent days, several of our customers have indicated that, while browsing, a pop-up ad offered them valuable prizes using the name of Magyar Posta, typically a mobile phone. Magyar Posta however does not have a mobile phone sweepstake. Please be careful before you clicking onto these and check our website for any of these promotions.

The deceptive ads normally feature an easy-to-do, seemingly innocent action, such as a simple click from users, and in the next step request personal information or a minimal payment. However, it is important to know that the cost of sweepstakes are typically borne by the advertising company and that there are always rules for the sweepstake. If the customer does not see any sweepstake rules on the given platform, it may give rise to suspicion.

The wording of the invitation may also be conspicuous. Phishing ads are usually written with a translation program, so in addition to spelling errors, an unusual style of writing may also be noticeable.

If you feel you have seen a suspicious ad referencing Magyar Posta, please report it to our customer service.

We are pleased to see that our customers are becoming more aware and alert, and recognise suspicious features, phishing or other fraud attempts.
